Simply put, a sinus lift makes it easier to place dental implants. It involves the increase of or lifting up of the maxillary sinus, in order to make more room for a new bone. The maxillary sinuses are air-filled cavities that are located just above the back part of the upper jaw. By lifting up the sinus and grafting bone between, there is more bone for a doctor to place a dental implant.

Some people need dental implants, but do not have enough upper jawbone to allow the implant to properly anchor. Without the proper support, a new implant cannot perform some of the more demanding tasks, like chewing. Without adequate bone, the dental implant will not secure properly, and it can fail. A sinus lift can help fix this by increasing the amount of upper jawbone by adding bone to the space between the molars and premolars. To make room for the added bone, the sinus membrane must be moved upward or “lifted,” which gives the surgery its name.
